This course is approved for 20 PDH; 2 IESNA CEUs; 20 USGBC CEs and 2 AIA LUs with Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) credit.

The IESNA St. Louis Section will be offering the New Updated "Fundamentals of Lighting Education Course".
The fundamentals of Lighting Course is an introductory course covering the basic and most important principles of lighting.  Over the three-day course, the following topics will be taught;

Below is the full  schedule for the upcoming IES training sessions.


Module 1 — Introduction to Light and Lighting

Instructor: Liz Arras, Meglio & Associates
Expertise:  She specializes in lighting applications and control systems.
Certifications: Arras holds an LC Lighting Certification from the National Council on Qulifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP), issued in December 2012.
Education:  She graduated from The University of Kansas ib 2003.

Module 8 — Lighting for Interior Environments

Instructor: Brian Waite, Acturis
Date: April 8 • Time: 10:15 AM – 12:15 PM
Duration: 2 hours

DIRECTOR & DESIGN LEADER - INTERIOR & LIGHTING DESIGN
Trained as an interior designer with experience directing projects from programming through installation, Brian’s passion for and skill in lighting design was honed at Arcturis. An emerging industry leader, Brian leads Arcturis’s lighting studio and has been recognized for his design expertise winning multiple IES awards for Arcturis projects. In addition to being our lighting specialist, Brian is instrumental in implementing sustainable practices into each project, educating staff in LEED design, and coordinating the LEED Certification process for our clients 


Module 3 — Daylighting

Instructor: Thad Martin, V3 Studios
Date: April 8 • Time: 12:45 – 2:15 PM
Duration: 1.5 hours
Break: 2:15–2:30 PM

With a lifetime of lighting design experience nurtured in the family-owned lighting showroom where he spent much of his youth, Thad brings energy, creativity, and a unique perspective to everything he does at V Three Studios. Having studied psychology, audio production and philosophy before earning his Master of Architecture from Washington University, Thad is a critical thinker with a passion for finding the ideal design solution for every project. He has nearly a decade of experience providing architectural design services for corporate, commercial, educational, civic, and hospitality clients. He has been a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) since 2016 and served as the IES St. Louis Section president in 2019. He has won multiple IES lighting design awards and AIA St. Louis design awards.  


Module 4 — Luminaires

Instructor: Marissa Sexton, Introba

Marissa Sexton is a lighting specialist with Introba, one of the world’s leading engineering and consulting firms focused on sustainable design and building performance. At Introba, she plays a key role in developing lighting strategies that balance aesthetics, efficiency, and occupant experience across a wide range of project types. Marissa is known for her clear, approachable teaching style and her commitment to advancing understanding of emerging lighting technologies within the design and engineering community.


Day 2 — April 9
Module 7 — Codes, Standards, and Practice
Instructor: Barry Reeb, McClure Engineering
Date: April 9 • Time: 8:00 – 10:00 AM
Duration: 2 hours

In an industry shaped by evolving regulations and rapidly advancing technology, understanding codes and standards is essential for delivering safe, efficient, and compliant projects. This program provides a comprehensive overview of the key codes and standards influencing today’s engineering practice, including the intent behind these requirements, how they impact project decision‑making, and best practices for integrating them into real‑world design workflows.

Barry Reeb of McClure Engineering will guide participants through the practical application of codes across various project types, highlighting common challenges, changes to watch for, and strategies to stay ahead in a constantly shifting regulatory landscape. Attendees will gain valuable insights to strengthen their technical judgment and enhance the quality and consistency of their work.


Module 9 — Lighting for Exterior Environments
Instructor: Randy Burkett, RBLD

Lunch: 11:45 AM – 12:15 PM

Randy Burkett, RBLD, is a nationally recognized lighting designer and the principal of Randy Burkett Lighting Design (RBLD). With decades of experience shaping award‑winning architectural and environmental lighting projects, Randy is widely respected for his ability to blend technical expertise with artistic intent to create meaningful, memorable illuminated environments.

Module 5 — Lighting Controls
Instructor: Matt Berhegger, Vector Electrical Sales

Module 2 — Electric Light Sources

The Fundamentals of Lighting Course is an entry-level program designed for individuals with little or no lighting knowledge. It covers 10 core lessons, making it ideal for beginners or those seeking a refresher on essential lighting principles.
